FERRARI ENZO 2004

The Enzo Ferrari (Type F140) is an ultra-high-performance, midengine berlinetta named after the company's founder, Enzo Ferrari. This car utilises a 6.0-litre V12 engine of the F140 family, producing 660 PS (485 kW; 651 hp) at 7800 rpm. The redline is 8,200 rpm.

The Enzo Ferrari uses a carbon fibre body Structure with a longitudinally mounted 65° V12 behind the passenger compartment, together with a transverse 6-speed sequential manual gearbox. This car utilises a Haldex all-wheel drive system, which will make this ultra high performance vehicle at its best. The brakes on the Enzo are quite big for their size, being Brembo GT/GTB calipers with carbon-ceramic discs, 410 mm at the front and 360 mm at the rear. It has a curb weight of 1380 kg (3056 lb), and a power-to-weight ratio of 2.63 kg (5.84 lb) per horsepower.

The Enzo Ferrari has won many prestigious awards. It was first presented at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, and only 349 cars were produced between 2002 and 2004.

This vehicle can be considered as a simple and successful formula: ultra high performance + sophisticated technology = ultimate driving experience. The Enzo Ferrari with its innovative technologies offers an intensive driving pleasure.

1. 2004 FERRARI ENZO CARBON FIBER

1.1 2004 FERRARI ENZO CARBON FIBER TECHNOLOGY

In developing the Enzo, Ferrari was concerned about safety and rigidity. In fact, this car is a very good example which shows how to produce high performance cars which are safe at the same time.

The technology used for this car is quite advanced, especially when it comes to the body. This car is made of Carbon Fibre. At first sight this may seem to be the same material used in racing cars, but actually it is not. The body of the Enzo Ferrari is made mostly of carbon fibre, including the monocoque and space-frame structural components. During normal operation, the body is almost a passive component, contributing negligible additional rigidity. However, in the event of a crash, the monocoque helps maintain the survival space for the driver.

Before we go deeper into this technology, let's briefly explain what carbon fibre is. The word 'carbon' reveals that it is a crystal called graphite, which has been organized in a regular, highly ordered way to form tiny tubes of pure carbon called carbon fibres or filaments. These fibres are incredibly strong for their relative weight, and are also thermally and electrically conductive. It is these properties which make carbon fibre so desirable in the manufacture of high-performance products.

The Enzo Ferrari uses CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). Even if it seems to be made of metal, the car is in fact made mostly of CFRP and not of steel as usual. It is a very light material: it has only one third the density of steel, yet CFRP parts can achieve much higher strength-to-weight ratios than those made from aluminium, due to its extremely efficient load transfer and fail-safe characteristics. The main reason why Ferrari has chosen this technology for this ultra high-performance car is the low density of the material (which ensures less weight for this car), but also its great rigidity. CFRP allows superior rigidity for an equivalent mass, which means that the engine can be mounted directly to the chassis without any loss in structural efficiency. The Enzo Ferrari has a monocoque body structure made of CFRP which is just 100 mm (3.9 in) thick, while normal production car body structures are 150-200 mm (5.9-7.9 in) thick.

The main material used for the Enzo Ferrari is carbon fibre, and it has received several patents for this technology like patent number EP1040458B1 of the EPO (European Patent Office).

1.2 THE FERRARI ENZO BRAKE SYSTEM

The brake system used by this car is a very special one, and is made of carbon-ceramic material called Carbon Silicon Carbide or more commonly known as CSC. This material offers a huge advantage for this type of brake system: it is very hard and can withstand extreme temperatures without wearing off. This type of brake discs doesn't need to be changed after a couple of years, unlike the brake disks made from carbon-metallic material. The Ferrari Enzo Carbon Silicon Carbide brake discs have an excellent resistance to wear and tear, and they are actually used in the F1 racing series. These discs are much more efficient than the brake discs made from carbon-metallic material, and they don't suffer from a phenomenon called brake fade at all.

1.3 THE FERRARI ENZO SUSPENSION SYSTEM

The Ferrari Enzo has a special suspension system which is also used in the F1 race cars. It is made of Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP). The main advantage of this system is that it is lightweight, but also very rigid. Only the front axle has conventional suspension system made from steel and aluminium alloy.

The reason why Ferrari has chosen such a light material for the suspension system is because CFRP parts can achieve much higher strength-to-weight ratios than those made from aluminium, due to its extremely efficient load transfer and fail-safe characteristics. The combined effect was a doubling of torsional rigidity and more than an 80% increase in beam stiffness: comparisons were favourable even with the racing models which had benefited from costly development programmes advanced materials such as GRP.

The front suspension sub-assembly is attached directly to the chassis without using any rubber bushings, which are used in conventional suspensions. This system ensures that there are no losses of stiffness due to deflection or vibration of rubber parts. Even if this makes the car much more rigid overall, it does not make the ride harder as long as the springs and dampers are correctly adjusted for road use.

1.7 ENGINE OIL AND COOLANT SYSTEMS

The engine oil needs to be changed every 7500 miles. The coolant is distilled water with glycol antifreeze protection and it does not need changing.

1.8 FUEL SYSTEMS

The Ferrari Enzo has three different fuel systems: the primary fuel tank, secondary fuel tank and the engine management system which controls both tanks. The primary fuel tank is made of rubber and has a capacity of 100 liters. The secondary fuel tank is made from carbon-fiber and it can hold up to 50 liters. Thanks to this dual system, the driver can run out of fuel on one side of the car without causing any problems with the engine management system.

But, the Enzo has better driving dynamics than the Carrera GT.

When it comes to the Ferrari Enzo vs Porsche Carrera GT, each car has its pros and cons. But, in reality it is not fair to compare these two cars because they are completely different. When you buy a car like this, it really just comes down to personal taste.
